Cleaning
The practical end-of-lease cleaning checklist for Sydney renters
Moving is busy enough without discovering a missed oven, dusty track or marked skirting board at the final inspection. A structured clean makes the handover easier and helps you document the condition you leave behind.
Start with the condition report
Use the ingoing condition report, lease instructions and any agent checklist as your starting point. Note pre-existing wear separately from dirt or damage, and ask the agent about any property-specific expectations before cleaning begins.
Plan backwards from the key-return time. Repairs, rubbish removal and outdoor work should generally happen before the detailed final clean so finished rooms stay clean.
Work from high to low
Begin with ceiling fans, vents, light fittings and the tops of cupboards. Continue through walls, switches, doors and skirting boards before vacuuming and mopping floors. This order prevents dust from falling onto finished surfaces.
In the kitchen, allow time for the oven, rangehood filters, splashback, cupboards and appliances supplied with the property. Bathrooms usually need attention around grout, screens, fixtures, mirrors and exhaust fans.
Do not overlook edges and access areas
Window tracks, sliding-door channels, wardrobe shelves, behind appliances and the corners of balconies are easy to miss. Garages, sheds, lawns and bins may also form part of the handover scope.
Before returning keys, photograph each room in good light. Keep copies of invoices and correspondence and report anything that could not be completed or requires the owner’s attention.
